Welcome to the Onomichi "Pirates" Cricket Club

From January 2011, Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture will establish its first cricket team, the Onomichi Pirates Cricket Club, to be known henceforth simply as the "Onomichi Pirates".

"Every great journey begins with a single step" and it is hoped that this initial step will assist in promoting the wonderful game of cricket in Onomichi City and in the surrounding areas of Hiroshima Prefecture as well as support others' efforts over the years to do the same in other areas of Japan.

Why did we choose the name "Onomichi Pirates"? Well, Onomichi City is located on the Seto Naikai (Japan's Inland Sea) and Innoshima Island, which is about 10 kilometers off shore and now officially part of Onomichi City. This island was home to the Murakami Suigun (a word that means “navy”, “pirates” or “privateers”). The Murakami Suigun were active across the Seto inland sea between the Muromachi and Sengoku eras, and their castle still exists in Innoshima today. Our other option was "Onomichi Ramen" (which is another thing Onomichi is famous for), but we felt that "Onomichi Pirates" had a little more flair!

We are now looking for interested players with experience or NOT, who would like to get together and knock some balls around at the end of January with the view of forming a competitive team in the future to play other teams in Japan. We hope to have some basic equipment sent from Australia by then, so if you think you'd like to have a bit of a bowling and batting practice, please get in touch. All ages or nationalities are welcome!

If you have never played the game before but are interested, then don't be shy, give us a bell and everyone will get a chance to have a bowl and a bat.
